#inktober2016 Day 3 – Unicorn
The earliest recorded description of a Unicorn describes it something like a cross between a wild ass and a rhino. Not a dainty beast but a fearsome and swift Prehistoric Unicorn with a single black horn.

Fiery Sun Heron God.
I think my theme this year is pretty obvious already.
Its Begins!
October is here and that means #Inktober 2016. I am aiming to do a drawing per day for the rest of the month. I have a brand new brown paper sketchbook to fill and my trusty micron pens along with some new brush pens – so lets do this!
“Freshly Fallen Snow”
Sketching out ideas on brown paper… I had an image in my mind of a large fringed shawl trailing through the snow, a girl in her night dress lead into the darkness. She is changed, her encounter leaving marks like impressions in the freshly fallen snow.
*Fun Fact: All of the domain names for “Beautiful Monsters” were held but not used by the studio that made Aliens when I first started my website which is why it is call “My Beautiful Monsters”.
For fun today I thought I would sketch Hunter from Neil Gaiman’s novel Neverwhere dressed in her battle trophies. I have never watch the TV series but I really enjoyed the book.
Pencil drawing over watercolor wash.
Fairytale Portrait – Snow White – inspired by the theory that Grimm’s Fairy Tale is based on the life of Margaretha von Waldeck, a German countess.
I liked the idea of her as real girl, in her own time and dress. And her story has then been woven into a tale that is still being retold today.
It has been a very busy few weeks so it was nice to get to sit down and unwind with a drawing just for fun. This is a sketch of Susan Sto Helit from Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series building on the inktober sketch I did of her last year. I drew this in about 2 hours last night before bed with a CastellXF 0.7 mechanical pencil.
Jannkin Hearts – Baron Heart’s younger brother and considered possibly even more dangerous then the King. Fanatically devoted to Law, he hopes to rid himself of all emotion and find Pure Truth by practising the ancient rituals of Order.
The Jack of Hearts completes the House of Hearts in my series called The Gamblers – characters and stories from which I’m building my own deck of playing cards.
I’m looking into starting a Patreon to help fund finishing off the remaining designs and go towards get the completed deck printed. I would like to share the preliminary sketches, more of background story and offer a limited number of commissions.
