Drawings from last month’s session of Dr Sketchy’s Melbourne featuring the beautiful  Bella Dejac and Kerry Whittle  from Beast Burlesque.

They enchanted us with their grace and power, spinning dark and poignant fairytales.

Inktober 2017 Week 2

Drawings from Week 2 of #inktober2017. I’m trying not to spend too long on these drawing. Including re-reading the story/summary, research, rough sketch and finished ink I am spending less then 2 hrs on each.

Day 8: The Twelve Dancing Princesses

Day 9: The Frog Prince

Day 10: The Little Mermaid

Day 11: The Emperor’s New Clothes

Day 12: The Princess and the Pea

Day 13: Little Red Riding Hood

Day 14: Thumbelina

I decided to keep going with the PITT pens. Even the smallest one doesn’t have a very fine point so I can’t spend too long adding in tiny details.

Inktober 2017 Week 1

#Inktober2017 Week 1

This year I’ve chosen ‘Fairytales’ as my theme. Some I know very well and some I am enjoying learning more about as I do them.

Day 1: Beauty and the Beast

Day 2: Cinderella

Day 3: The Ugly Duckling

Day 4: Rumpelstiltskin

Day 5: The Snow Queen

Day 6: Hansel and Gretel

Day 7: Snow White

For theses drawings I’ve been experimenting with some PITT pens I received as a gift and a cheap Japanese calligraphy brush pen. I have been enjoying the PITT brush pen and the calligraphy brush but I can’t get the fine line quality I want from the felt tips. I’m torn between sticking with them for consistency or going back to by trusty micro pens.

Fairytale “Jewel Thief”

This idea started out as a concept for a new web banner combining symbols from classic fairytales. As I work on it more it developed into its own story of a fairy thief and a magic glowing jewel.

I slowly worked on inking this image a bit at a time in a quiet moment or two as a way to relax amongst all of the events of the last few months.

I still need to make a new web banner but I enjoyed the journey this piece took.

The Wishing Cake – Short Comic Folktale

wishingcake_01

This is a short folktale I wrote while thinking about my birthday later this month and the rituals of birthday cakes.

I drew and inked the comic by hand as practice to kick off #Inktober2016. I only added the text digitally in photoshop. I have a few stories underway that I hope I will have time to work on and share soon.

Fairytale Portrait – Snow White

FairytalePortrait_SnowWhite_01

Fairytale Portrait – Snow White – inspired by the theory that Grimm’s Fairy Tale is based on the life of  Margaretha von Waldeck, a German countess.

I liked the idea of her as real girl, in her own time and dress. And her story has then been woven into a tale that is still being retold today.
