Strip Strip Hooray – Melbourne

StripStripHooray_2016_01

This weekend I got to cross “See Dita Perform” off my life to-do list! Strip Strip Hooray returned to Melbourne for 2 encore shows after the first sold out within hours and I wasn’t going to miss my chance!

All of the performers were incredible and EVERYTHING sparkled! Dita’s iconic performances are iconic for good reason. She is impossibly graceful and precise yet genuinely seemed to enjoy herself.  Did I mention that everything was sparkly – breathtakingly, dazzlingly sparkly.

The opening act was her Martini Glass routine and the crowd was instantly mesmerised. When she splashed it looked like diamonds falling in slow motion. This small (14x19cm) painting is my attempt to capture that.

White Cloud Worlds – Wellington NZ

At the start of this month James and I took a short trip to Wellington NZ so that I could attend White Cloud World’s Art and Industry of Imagination Conference  as part of NZ ComicCon, with Massey University and Weta Workshop.

Thank you to Lauren Panepinto who interested in the conference made me aware of it. Thank you especially to Paul Tobin (one of the organisers) and Claire Tobin who I was able to meet at Supanova Melb thanks to my good friend LoopyDave.

After landing and a short nap we head to the Queen’s Wharf for dinner and the opening night of the White Cloud World’s Exhibition at Academy Galleries. The range and quality of the work was incredible including works from Massey students and the new augmented table top game, GKR by Weta Workshop.  Surrounded by impressive work the event had a great atmosphere of friendly celebration and we stayed and chatted to people late into the night.

We were up bright and earlier the next day to walk to Massey for the Conference. We started the day discussing the pros and cons of vegemite with Nathan Jureviciu before he went on stage as the opening key note speaker.

I was not prepared for the daylong event of intensely inspiring talks, wisdom and great stories. It was hard to soak up all that insight in one day! I plan to keep going back to the notes that I took that day to help me moving into the future.

Paul was very kind to invite us along to the after conference dinner where we got to enjoy a fantastic evening with some amazing artist. Sharing stories over dinner with the legendary Iain McCaig and his son Indigo and the charming Christian Gossett was wonderful but surreal.

We spent the following day exploring the Te Papa museum until they closed. I highly recommend it. Of the extensive and well presented collections the section of Historical photos in the Arts gallery were fascinating.

Wellington Amageddon was also on that weekend as part of NZ ComicCon which, strangely, was held in the outer ring of a stadium. This had its good points, having lots space and doors to let in fresh air but on the down side was very cold.  Sitting in a mostly empty stadium with anime playing on the giant outdoor screens was also a surreal experience.

Adding to the list of educational artist we met on our trip we spoke with Carl Potts, American comic book artist and editor, and listen to his talk at Amageddon on visual storytelling.

Throughout our trip I was struck by how welcoming and relaxed everything felt- from the exhibition on our first night, to the causal running of the conference and all of the people we spoke to.

While at the conference I purchased the latest White Cloud Worlds art book and I tried to have everyone I meet leave a message in it. I will treasure it and these memories.

I however miss asking a few people so I will definitely have to go back and see them again!

Wellington had one last surprise waiting for us at the airport as we left. In the very early hours of the morning, before the sunrise, we snuck past the head of sleeping Smug to check our bags for the plane and say good bye to NZ for now.

Hooping Session with Lorelle Rouge at Covert Characters Life Drawing

About every 2 weeks I get to go to Covert Characters life drawing and spend an evening with some fantastic people, drink some wine and draw!

Last session featured the lovely Lorelle Rouge, alternative model and aerialist, with her hoop.

Her combination of strength and grace was a pleasure to draw.

Raven Hatchling Plush Toys

I made 2 new plush Raven Hatchlings to take to OZ ComicCon last weekend.  Happily both Poe and Cog found loving new homes before lunch on the first day!

Each Raven is roughly 15 cm tall (6 inches) made from soft grey and black fleece. They have felt “beards” and eye surrounds.  The polyfil stuffing makes them very plump and squeezable.

Both have name tags with hand-cut leather and bead charms.

Anyone interested in having a Raven of their own can contact me through my Esty shop.

I will be listing more unique handmade plush toys and prints in my shop in the next few weeks.

Susan Sto Helit – Discworld Sketch

Susan Sto Helit - Character Sketch Terry Pratchett's Discworld

It has been a very busy few weeks so it was nice to get to sit down and unwind with a drawing just for fun. This is a sketch of Susan Sto Helit from Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series building on the inktober sketch I did of her last year. I drew this in about 2 hours last night before bed with a CastellXF 0.7 mechanical pencil.

Covert Characters Life Drawing – Ameena

LifeDrawing_CovertCharacters_Ameena_01

When our usual fabulous Cover Characters host Cindy couldn’t take the class last month she asked if I could take over the session with the help of my best friend and art buddy Nicole.

It was my first time teaching a life drawing class but I had a  great and unexpected response from the artist that attended. Hosting the session I wasn’t able to get as much sketching done as I would have liked but I was able to get some quick drawings at the start and through some of the longer poses.

Our beautiful model Ameena was lovely and very understanding of our lack of experience <3

Blue Eyes White Dragon Custom Plush

Lately I have had more requests for larger and more complex plushies. The latest custom plush order was for a “chibi” Blue Eyes White Dragon from Yu Gi Oh.

I interpreted the character into my own original design to than translate it into a plush toy pattern. The plush is made from quality soft fleece, felt and freehand machine embroidery details.
The design includes:
– Plastic “boned” wings
РUnique appliqu̩ head marking
– Re-enforced open mouth with teeth

Completed plush was meant to stands approx. 10 inches tall but it ended up being closer to 15 inches high making it a good huggable size.
